The International Staging System (ISS) and the Revised International Staging System (R-ISS) are commonly used prognostic scores in multiple myeloma (MM). These methods have significant gaps, particularly among intermediate-risk groups. The aim of this study was to improve risk stratification in newly diagnosed MM patients using data from three different trials developed by the Spanish Myeloma Group.

Article Synopsis
  • A phase III trial with 286 multiple myeloma patients explored the effects of adding clarithromycin to the lenalidomide and dexamethasone (Rd) treatment.
  • * Despite a higher complete response rate in the clarithromycin group (C-Rd), no significant difference in progression-free survival (PFS) was found between the two treatment arms.
  • * The addition of clarithromycin resulted in more toxic deaths, suggesting that it did not provide significant benefits and may have led to increased side effects in this patient population.

Background: Patients treated with hemodialysis frequently experience cardiovascular complications attributed, among other causes, to dyslipidemia, increased oxidative stress, and inflammation.

Objective: The aim of the study was to study the effects of dietary supplementation with concentrated red grape juice (RGJ), a source of polyphenols, on lipoprotein profile, antioxidant capacity, LDL oxidation, and inflammatory biomarkers.

Design: Twenty-six patients receiving hemodialysis and 15 healthy subjects were instructed to drink 100 mL RGJ/d for 14 d.

Objective: To assess the efficiency of nandrolone decanoate (ND) in the control of anemia in elderly male patients on hemodialysis (HD), and to determine its influence on nutritional parameters.

Design: A prospective 6-month study with randomization of patients on recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) therapy into two groups. Group A: rHuEPO was stopped before starting treatment with ND.

To determine the influence of parathyroid hormone (PTH) on lipid disturbances of uremia, the lipid profile was determined in 34 hemodialysis (HD) patients, comparing lipid parameters among subjects classified according to their intact PTH level. Furthermore, the effect of correction of severe secondary hyperparathyroidism on serum lipids was evaluated in 7 patients after parathyroidectomy. Total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins (HDL), triglycerides, apolipoproteins A-I and B-100 (Apo B and Apo B), lipoprotein(a) and the ratios of cholesterol/HDL and Apo A/Apo B were analyzed.

We have studied the changes in the lipid profile of 14 chronic hemodialysis patients receiving a 6-month cycle of nandrolone decanoate as treatment for anemia. Nandrolone decanoate was administered in a weekly intramuscular dose of 200 mg and resulted in an increase in the hemoglobin concentration (baseline, 7.9 +/- 0.

Pregnancy and delivery in homozygous familial hypercholesterolemic (HFH) patients is extremely rare. We describe the case of a woman with HFH treated with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis by dextran sulfate adsorption who became pregnant and reached delivery uneventfully. LDL apheresis was performed biweekly, and lipoprotein analyses in pre-apheresis samples showed progressive increases in triglyceride, total cholesterol, and apolipoprotein (apo) B plasma concentrations.
