The effect of dietary nutrients on novel farm species has always garnered wide research and economic interest. Chinese perch, an economically important carnivorous fish, accepts an artificial diet after taming, so it is essential to evaluate and optimize the nutritional and metabolic demands of this species. However, little is known about the effect of an artificial diet on the growth and metabolism of Chinese perch.

Background: Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) MRI is a promising approach for detecting biochemical alterations in cancers and neurological diseases, but the quantification can be challenging. Among numerous quantification methods, Lorentzian difference (LD) is relatively simple and widely used, which employs Lorentzian line-shape as a reference to describe the direct saturation (DS) of water and takes account of difference against experimental CEST spectra data. However, LD often overestimates CEST and nuclear overhauser enhancement (NOE) effects.

High blood pressure (BP) is closely related to obesity, and weight loss lowers BP. Evidence has shown considerable interpersonal variation of changes in BP among people experiencing weight loss, and such variation might be partly determined by genetic factors. We assessed the changes in systolic and diastolic BP (SBP/DBP) among 692 participants randomly assigned to 1 of 4 diets varying in macronutrient content for 2 years.

Presequence protease (PreP) is a proteostatic enzyme that plays a key role in the maintenance of mitochondrial health. Defects in PreP stability are associated with neurological disorders in humans, and altered activity of this enzyme modulates the progress of Alzheimer's disease-like pathology in mice. As agonists that boost PreP proteolytic activity represent a promising therapeutic avenue, we sought to determine the structural basis for the action of benzimidazole derivatives (3c and 4c), first reported by Vangavaragu et al.

Article Synopsis
  • Protoceratium reticulatum is a toxic dinoflagellate with a cyst stage that serves as a crucial paleoenvironmental indicator, showing phenotypic plasticity in its morphology and DNA sequences.
  • Researchers isolated 55 single cysts or cells from various global locations and found that while most strains shared identical LSU rDNA sequences, they differed significantly in ITS rDNA sequences, categorizing them into three distinct ribotypes: A, B, and C.
  • The study revealed that ribotypes exhibited slight variations in growth responses to temperature, with ribotype A from Arctic areas having specific structural differences in its ITS-2 sequences compared to ribotypes B and C, which included temperate and subtropical strains.

The Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rat is an established model of SS hypertension and renal damage. In addition to salt, other dietary components were shown to be important determinants of hypertension in SS rats. With previous work eliminating the involvement of genetic differences, grain-fed SS rats from Charles River Laboratories (SS/CRL; 5L2F/5L79) were less susceptible to salt-induced hypertension and renal damage compared with purified diet-fed SS rats bred at the Medical College of Wisconsin (SS/MCW; 0.

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive intracranial tumor and diffuse migration is the leading cause of death. Recent evidence has indicated that heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A2B1 (hnRNP A2B1) is overexpressed in human glioblastoma tissue and enhances glioblastoma invasion in vitro. We found by mass spectrometry that hnRNP A2B1 interacts with human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) immediate early 86 protein (IE86, ie2 gene-encoded) in malignant glioma cells (U87MG) infected with HCMV.

Although PCV2 infections generally cause mild disease in pigs, concurrent co-infections with other pathogens can damage the immune system and cause more severe diseases, collectively termed porcine circovirus associated diseases (PCVAD). Involvement of porcine parvovirus (PPV, a common cause of reproductive failure in naïve dams) in PCVAD caused by PCV2, has been reported. As this co-infection can be difficult to eliminate, there is a critical need to develop an effective vaccine to protect against PPV or synergistic effects of PCV2 and PPV under field conditions.

Human blood pressure salt sensitivity is associated with changes in urinary metabolites related to fumarase (Fh) and nitric oxide (NO) metabolism, and fumarase promotes NO production through an arginine regeneration pathway. We examined the role of the fumarase-NO pathway in the development of hypertension using genetically engineered rat models. Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rats with heterozygous mutation of eNOS (endothelial NO synthase or Nos3; SS-Nos3) were bred with SS rats with a hemizygous Fh transgene.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are one of the most abundant ingredients in breast milk, and they play a beneficial role for newborns and are important for infant health. The peripheral fucosylated sequences of HMOs, such as the histo-blood group ABH(O) and Lewis a, b, x, and y antigens, are determined by the expression of the secretor (Se) and Lewis (Le) genes in the mammary gland, and are often the recognition motifs and serve as decoy receptors for microbes. In this work, we developed a method for determination of secretor status and Lewis blood phenotype and assignment of Lewis blood-group epitopes.
