Early complications with flexible intramedullary nailing in childhood fracture: 100 cases managed with precurved tip and shaft nails.

Background And Purpose: Diaphyseal and metaphyseal fractures in children are frequently treated with the flexible intramedullary nailing (FIN) method. The aim of this study was to record postoperative complications and outcome in consecutive fracture patients treated with the new precurved tip and shaft nails and dedicated ergonomic instrumentation.

Methods: We report the analysis of 100 consecutive fractures followed up for a minimum of 6 months.

Valgus osteotomy for hinge abduction.

Failure of the enlarged and deformed anterolateral portion of the femoral head to roll into the acetabulum during abduction alters hip joint mechanics. The resultant hinge abduction is associated with pain, and the patient often has restricted movement. A valgus osteotomy removes the deformed portion of the femoral head away from the weight-bearing area and ensures there is pain-free congruent range of movement around the weight-bearing position.

Fracture risk in unicameral bone cyst. Is magnetic resonance imaging a better predictor than plain radiography?

The classical indication for treating a simple bone cyst is usually the risk of fracture, which can be predicted based on three parameters: the bone cyst index, the bone cyst diameter, and the minimal cortical thickness. A retrospective review was carried out based on imaging of 35 simple bone cysts (30 humeral and 5 femoral). The three parameters were measured on standard radiographs, and on T1-weighted and T2-weighted MRI.

Reliability of the Lagrange and Rigault classification system of supracondylar humerus extension fractures in children.

Introduction: The Lagrange and Rigault classification was designed to describe extension-type supracondylar fractures of the humerus. It can also help in treatment decision-making.

Hypothesis: The reliability of this classification has not yet been proven.
