Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if mixed micelles made with specific surfactants could effectively encapsulate the poorly soluble cancer drug fenretinide (4-HPR).
  • The micelles were created using different ratios and showed promising results, including an encapsulation efficiency of 88%, a significant increase in solubility, and stability during storage and dilution.
  • Testing indicated that the encapsulated 4-HPR was more effective at reducing neuroblastoma cell viability compared to the free drug, suggesting these micelles could be a valuable tool for cancer treatment.

In 2019, the European Union banned Triton X-100, a detergent widely used in laboratory diagnostics, including the Viral PCR Sample Solution (VPSS), and urged manufacturers to find environmentally sustainable alternatives. Tergitol 15-S-9 (VPSS2) has been proposed as an alternative surfactant. This multicenter study evaluated the effectiveness of VPSS2, a Tergitol-based viral solution, as a replacement for VPSS.

Liposomal amphotericin B (Ambisome) is the gold standard for the treatment and prevention of fungal infections both in the adult and pediatric populations. The lyophilized dosage form has to be reconstituted and diluted by hospital staff, but its management can be challenging due to the spontaneous tendency of amphotericin B to form aggregates with different biological activity. In this study, the colloidal stability of the liposomes and the chemical stability of amphotericin B were investigated over time at storage conditions.

Removing the swab after collection can speed up diagnosis and improve the quality of laboratory procedures. This study investigates the impact of swab removal on SARS-CoV-2 detection in clinical specimens with a focus on high Cycle threshold (Ct) samples (Cts≥32). The method assessed pairs of SARS-CoV-2 samples mimicking combined throat and nose swabs and tested them on two real-time-PCR platforms; the Applied Biosystems 7500 and the Abbott Alinity.

Neuroblastoma (NB) is a severe form of tumor occurring mainly in young children and originating from nerve cells found in the abdomen or next to the spine. NB needs more effective and safer treatments, as the chance of survival against the aggressive form of this disease are very small. Moreover, when current treatments are successful, they are often responsible for unpleasant health problems which compromise the future and life of surviving children.
