Objectives: Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is a major anti-fibrinolytic glycoprotein thought to promote vascular diseases. Recently we have shown that systemically injecting mice with kainate, an analog of the principal brain excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate, immediately induced PAI-1 mRNA in brain vascular cells which are not known to contain glutamate receptors. Here we further investigated whether: (a) kainate also increases PAI-1 gene expression in the cardiac vascular bed; (b) subunits of kainate/AMPA receptors could be expressed in cardiac and brain vascular cells; and (c) PAI-1 mRNA could be similarly induced by agonists of adrenergic receptors that are candidates to act downstream in kainate-activated pathways.

Bacillus stearothermophilus T-6 produces an extracellular xylanase that was shown to optimally bleach pulp at pH 9 and 65 degrees C. The enzyme was purified and concentrated in a single adsorption step onto a cation exchanger and is made of a single polypeptide with an apparent M(r) of 43,000 (determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis). Xylanase T-6 is an endoxylanase that completely degrades xylan to xylose and xylobiose.

IBC-3 computer-based automated system was used to analyze the cardiotocograms obtained in the course of 40 induced labors. Labor was induced by amniotomy in Group 1 parturients, by a combined method (amniotomy followed by i.v.

Developing acute fetal hypoxia was detected in 3 cases, that permitted timely abdominal deliveries to preserve the fetuses. The described device was found highly informative and valuable.

The diagnostic system of cardiotocogram analysis in real time scale is described, and the diagnostic data of computer cardiotocography in various periods of os dilatation presented. Analysis of correlations and regressions of the parameters reflecting disorders of the fetal status has shown that the most significant parameter in the diagnosis of fetal status abnormalities is variability from beat to beat.
