  • A team updated the 2017 EULAR treatment recommendations for systemic sclerosis (SSc) to include new evidence and therapy options.
  • They conducted a systematic literature review and developed 22 recommendations across 8 clinical areas, focusing mainly on skin fibrosis and interstitial lung disease (ILD).
  • The updated guidelines now suggest new treatments like mycophenolate mofetil and rituximab and emphasize a research agenda for future therapies targeting various aspects of SSc.

Background: When coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) first spread to the United States, our institution was at the outbreak's epicenter. Despite limited understanding of COVID-19's long-term effects, we continued performing surgical fixation of geriatric hip fractures under strict guidelines. This study examined the outcomes of these patients during the pandemic compared with those of patients treated pre-pandemic.

Background: Rectal cancer (RC) occupies a leading position in the structure of oncological morbidity and mortality. Aberrant methylation of tumor-suppressor genes and hypomethylation of retrotransposons were shown to be detectable in cell-free DNA, circulating in the blood (cfDNA) of cancer patients, indicating the possibility to use them as diagnostic and prognosis markers.

Purpose: Evaluation of the changes in the methylation level of LINE-1 elements and SEPTIN9 and IKZF1 genes in the cell-surface-bound cfDNA (csb-cfDNA) from the blood of RC patients after antitumor therapy at a long-term follow-up.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the risks posed by zoonotic diseases, which can jump from animals to humans, emphasizing the need for monitoring pathogens in domestic animals.
  • A multi-target serological plasmonic biosensor was developed for rapid testing of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in domestic animals, providing results in under 15 minutes with accurate sensitivity and reasonable specificity.
  • This portable biosensor could serve as a reliable diagnostic tool in veterinary healthcare, expanding the use of plasmonic technology for quick and localized testing of infections in animals.

Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is a severe complication of pregnancy associated with excessive invasion of cytotrophoblast cells at the sites of the endometrial-myometrial interface and the myometrium itself in cases of adherent (creta) and invasive (increta and percreta) forms, respectively. This leads to a high risk of massive blood loss, maternal hysterectomy, and preterm birth. Despite advancements in ultrasound protocols and found associations of alpha-fetoprotein, PAPP-A, hCG, PLGF, sFlt-1, IL-8, and IL-33 peripheral blood levels with PAS, there is a high need for an additional non-invasive test to improve the diagnostic accuracy and to select the real PAS from the suspected ones in the first-trimester screening.
