Article Synopsis
  • Lipomatous tumors are the most common soft tissue neoplasms, and distinguishing between benign lipomas and more serious atypical lipomatous tumors requires accurate diagnostic methods, including MDM2/CDK4 immunostaining.
  • In a study involving 109 patients, only a small fraction of those diagnosed with atypical tumors tested positive for MDM2, indicating that traditional morphological diagnoses may be unreliable.
  • The study highlighted that certain clinical features, such as older patient age and larger tumor size, could help identify potential atypical tumors, even though the overall accuracy of the diagnostic methods assessed was not very high.

Background The production of inflammatory cytokines is reportedly increased in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), causing the migration of neutrophils and monocytes to lung tissues. This disrupts the air-blood barrier by damaging the bronchial epithelial and vascular endothelial cells. As multiorgan dysfunction in sepsis is considered to be partly caused by complement activation, which can cause lung injury in patients with COVID-19.

Objective: To investigate which joint microarchitectural parameters measured by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) serve as imaging markers for rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: The second and third metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints of 50 patients with RA and 50 healthy controls (HCs) (aged 50-79 years, all females) were scanned using a HR-pQCT. Joint space, trabecular bone microarchitecture, and erosion were measured and compared between RA patients and HCs.

Purpose: The effects of daily teriparatide (D-PTH, 20 μg/day), weekly high-dose teriparatide (W-PTH, 56.5 μg/week), or bisphosphonate (BP) on the vertebra and proximal femur were investigated using quantitative computed tomography (QCT).

Methods: A total of 131 postmenopausal women with a history of fragility fractures were randomized to receive D-PTH, W-PTH, or bisphosphonate (oral alendronate or risedronate).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compared the radiological features and short-term clinical outcomes of two knee surgeries: open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) and tibial condylar valgus osteotomy (TCVO), focusing on patients with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis (OA).
  • - Results showed that while TCVO patients had more severe OA and instability before surgery, both surgery types improved alignment and instability post-operation, though TCVO patients had lower range of motion and KOOS scores in specific areas like symptoms and pain.
  • - The findings suggest that while both procedures are effective, TCVO may be more suitable for patients with advanced OA, joint incongruity, and instability.
