Objective: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a devastating disease of the hip joint. Its early diagnosis is crucial to increase the chances of joint preserving, yet difficult due to similarities with osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip in its clinical appearance. The purpose of this study was to enhance the understanding of ONFH and its pathologic processes in contrast to OA and to identify serum biomarkers helping to improve the diagnosis of the disease.

Persistent problems due to the hardware and the necessity of hardware removal has led to the development of absorbable implants. To overcome the limitations of formerly used materials for biodegradable implants, recently magnesium has been introduced as a novel implant material.

Forty-four patients (45 feet) were included in this prospective study. A modified Chevron osteotomy was performed on every patient and a magnesium screw used for fixation.

To study the molecular mechanisms involved, the potential contribution of soluble magnesium corrosion products to the stimulation of osteoblastic cell differentiation was examined. However, no evidence for the stimulation of osteoblast differentiation could be obtained when cultured mesenchymal precursor cells were differentiated in the presence of metallic magnesium or in cell culture medium containing elevated magnesium ion levels.
