CT and MRI diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease: going beyond the pixels.

Cerebrovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States, with an incidence of approximately 500,000 cases of stroke per year. Tremendous strides in the diagnosis of stroke have been made in recent years, although the main diagnostic tools available remain CT, MRI, and MR angiography. Because new treatment options are being developed, it has become imperative to analyze these anatomic studies more intensively and critically, with an eye toward eliciting vital pathophysiological information.
