  • The study aimed to develop an animal welfare assessment protocol specifically for quails raised for meat production, addressing the lack of established protocols for this species.
  • Conducted across 14 Spanish farms, the assessment used a multidimensional approach with 4 principles and 12 criteria, scoring various animal-based indicators (ABIs) to evaluate overall welfare.
  • Key welfare issues identified included inadequate temperature and lighting conditions, overcrowding at feeders, and poor health indicators, yet the farms achieved overall good welfare scores, signifying an effective assessment tool for improving quail care.

Article Synopsis
  • Crm1 is a key nuclear exportin responsible for transporting over 1000 human proteins, including RNP complexes, but the interaction mechanism with these cargos is not fully understood.
  • The study reveals a cryo-electron microscopy structure of the HIV-1 nuclear export complex, showcasing how the Rev protein binds to a new site on Crm1 that stabilizes its dimeric form and positions nuclear export sequences (NESs) for effective transport.
  • Research findings indicate that Crm1 has multiple recognition sites for different types of cargo, emphasizing its ability to interact with a diverse range of proteins and RNPs.

While universal tumor testing for Lynch Syndrome (LS) is recommended in all new diagnoses of colorectal cancer (CC) and endometrial cancer (EC), the cost and availability of this test in low-resource settings poses challenges. The PREdiction Model for gene Mutations (PREMM) is a clinical algorithm designed to assess the risk of an individual carrying estimates one's risk of carrying a LS mutation. This study aims to assess the feasibility of using PREMM to screen for LS risk in Guatemala.

The EFSA Panel on Animal Health and Welfare (AHAW) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the use of high-expansion foam for stunning and killing pigs and poultry. A dossier was provided by the applicant as the basis for an assessment of the extent to which the method is able to provide a level of animal welfare at least equivalent to that ensured by the currently allowed methods for pigs and poultry. According to legislation, to be approved in the EU, new stunning methods must ensure (1) the absence of pain, distress or suffering until the onset of unconsciousness, and (2) that the animal remains unconscious until death.
