Resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics represents a formidable global challenge, manifesting in intricate public health ramifications including escalated mortality rates and augmented healthcare costs. The current efforts to manage antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are limited mainly to the standard therapeutic approaches. The aim of this study is to present and analyze the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the search for new phyto-compounds and novel interactions with antimicrobial effects.

The consequences of stroke include cognitive deficits and sensorimotor disturbances, which are largely related to mitochondrial impairments in the brain. In this work, we have shown that the mimetic of the ketogenic diet beta-hydroxybutyrate (βHB) can improve neurological brain function in stroke. At 3 weeks after photothrombotic stroke, mice receiving βHB with drinking water before and after surgery recovered faster in terms of sensorimotor functions assessed by the string test and static rods and cognitive functions assessed by the Morris water maze.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how early ischemic conditions affect action potential duration (APD) prolongation and its link to arrhythmias, specifically focusing on phase 1A ventricular fibrillation (VF) during coronary occlusion in pigs.
  • - Results revealed that significant prolongation of the activation-repolarization interval (ARIc) occurred shortly after occlusion and was strongly correlated with the development of VF and changes in the QT interval on ECG.
  • - Patch-clamp experiments showed that while some substances did not affect APD, the compound pinacidil induced both initial APD prolongation and eventual shortening, highlighting complex mechanisms at play during ischemia.

Article Synopsis
  • The tardigrade genus Acutuncus was previously believed to only exist in Antarctica, but recent discoveries in the Svalbard archipelago challenge this notion.
  • New populations found in the UK and Italy, along with an Antarctic population, have expanded the climatic and geographic range of Acutuncus, leading to a revision of its classification into a new family, Acutuncidae.
  • Two distinct species morpho-groups based on egg morphology have been identified, and two new species, Acutuncus mecnuffisp. nov. and Acutuncus giovanniniaesp. nov., have been described in Europe.

In myocardial ischemia, melatonin confers antiarrhythmic action, but its electrocardiographic expression is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the effects of melatonin treatment on electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters reflecting major arrhythmogenic factors and to test the association of these parameters with ventricular fibrillation (VF) incidence. Myocardial ischemia was induced by 40 min coronary artery occlusion in 25 anesthetized pigs.
