Objectives: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a novel diagnostic marker for various metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. However, little is known about the association of the TyG index with plasma atherogenicity, especially with its latent forms. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of the use of the TyG index as a marker of atherogenic risk.

Article Synopsis
  • * It involved 814 patients aged 40 and above from various countries, finding that 52.3% were robust, 41.9% were prefrail, and 5.8% were frail, with 38.8% showing cognitive dysfunction.
  • * The research indicates that factors like older age, female sex, and comorbidities are linked to frailty and cognitive issues, suggesting that these challenges are significant even in patients with mild heart defects, thus advocating for regular assessments.*

Fatty liver index (FLI) was developed as a simple and accurate marker of hepatic steatosis. FLI is derived from an algorithm based on body mass index, waist circumference, and levels of triglycerides and gamma-glutamyltransferase, and it is widely used in clinical and epidemiological studies as a screening tool for discriminating between healthy and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) subjects. However, a systematic review of the literature regarding FLI revealed that this index has more extensive relationships with biochemical and physiological parameters.

A three-month-old female infant with a structurally normal heart was diagnosed with fungal endocarditis of the mitral valve with cerebral embolism. After antifungal therapy and a valve-sparing operation with complete removal of the fungal vegetations, a relapse with complete destruction of the valve leaflets and severe mitral regurgitation with decompensated heart failure occurred three months later. A second operation with successful mitral valve replacement was performed.

Objectives: Data concerning the association of vitamin D with metabolic disturbances in adolescents are contradictory. The aim of this study was to identify metabolic abnormalities in adolescents with 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) deficiency and to determine informative indices for the early detection of these metabolic disturbances.

Methods: A cross-sectional observational study including 90 adolescents aged 13-15 years was carried out during the winter.
