Newcastle disease virus () is a contagious high-impact poultry pathogen with infections detected worldwide. In the present study, 19,500 clinical samples from wild bird species and poultry collected from 28 regions of Russia between 2017 and 2021 were screened for the presence of the genome. NDV RNA was detected in 15 samples from wild birds and 63 samples from poultry.

In 2021, several isolates of the H5N5 avian influenza virus (AIV) were detected in Europe and the Russian Federation, which differed from those detected in 2020. Genetic analysis revealed a relationship between the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N5 subtype, detected in Europe, and some isolates detected in the Russian Federation territory in 2020-2021: it was shown that both originated in the Caspian Sea regions around the autumn of 2020. The appearance of H5N5 subtype viruses in the spring of 2021 in Europe and the Russian Federation was not associated with the mass migration of birds from Africa.

This paper presents genetic data on the full genome analysis of A/chicken/Tajikistan/2379/2018 H9N2 influenza virus isolated in September 2018 from chicken pathological material received from poultry farms of the Republic of Tajikistan and subtyped as H9N2 by serological and molecular methods. According to the results of hemagglutinin gene sequencing, the amino acid sequence of the cleavage site was RSSR/GLF, which is typical for low-virulent avian influenza virus. Phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide sequence of a hemagglutinin gene fragment (nt 1-1539 of the open reading frame) showed that the A/chicken/Tajikistan/2379/2018 H9N2 isolate belongs to the Y280 genetic group of low-virulent A/H9 influenza virus, which is widespread in Southeast Asia.

An exogenous "armoured" PCR internal control (IC) short RNA was analyzed in conjunction with real-time RT-PCR method for diagnosis of avian influenza. The resistance to nucleases and increased physical stability of the IC was ensured using branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) which was in complex with IC-RNA. The option to add the IC directly to pathological material suspensions allows measurement of the nucleic acids extraction efficiency.

Monitoring programs for highly dangerous avian diseases in the Russian Federation from 2001 to 2009 detected 77 samples that were PCR positive for avian paramyxovirus serotype-1 (APMV-1) from sick or dead feral and domestic pigeons. Nucleotide sequences of the fusion (F) gene, including a nucleotide sequence encoding the F protein cleavage site, were determined for these isolates. All of the studied isolates possessed virulent F0 protein cleavage sites (112KRKKRF117, 112RRQKRF117, or 112KRQKRF117).
