Importance: Cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) remains a significant problem following cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Various strategies are proposed to attenuate CSA-AKI, including extracorporeal blood purification (EBP), but little is known about the effect of EBP through an acrylonitrile-sodium methallylsulfonate/polyethyleneimine membrane during CPB.

Objective: To determine whether the use of an EBP device in a nonemergent cardiac surgery population reduces CSA-AKI after CPB.

Sepsis and multiple organ failure (MOF) are characterized by multiple hemodynamic changes and imbalanced immune response of the patient. Oxiris is a highly adsorptive membrane with the ability to remove cytokines and endotoxins, as well as to perform renal replacement therapy. Here we describe the evolution from previous AN69 to the 3-in-1 Oxiris membrane, and review its characteristics and performance.

Stress-activated protein kinases (SAPKs) enhance survival in response to environmental changes. In yeast, the Hog1 SAPK and Mrc1, a protein required for DNA replication, define a safeguard mechanism that allows eukaryotic cells to prevent genomic instability upon stress during S-phase. Here we show that, in mammals, the p38 SAPK and Claspin-the functional homolog of Mrc1-protect cells from DNA damage upon osmostress during S-phase.

Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae) is the vector of rose rosette virus (RRV), which causes rose rosette disease (RRD) in North America. The RRD symptoms, such as witches' broom, flower, and leaf deformation, disrupt the aesthetic appearance of plants and cause plant mortality. Because there is no cure for RRV, it is critical to manage the vector and reduce the spread of the virus.
