In adolescent girls the administration of hormonal contraception raises special problems because of the still unstable menstrual cycle of this group. The influence of four oral contraceptives with different high doses on the levels of the two gonadotropins, estradiol and progesterone has been studied with the aid of the GnRH-test before, during and after treatment. According to the results obtained low-dose combination preparations should be administered to adolescents with stable cycles as in this group normal physiological conditions reappeared without delay after discontinuation of a one-year treatment.

The investigation of four oral contraceptives with different doses in adolescent girls showed that bleeding disturbances occur more frequently with low-dose preparations at the beginning of treatment. Nevertheless, these disturbances should be considered indicative of lesser central suppression. For this reason adolescent girls -- especially those with still immature cycles -- should be treated chiefly with preparations having only a low inhibitory effect on the central endocrine system in order not to disturb the maturation of the cycle.

In young women aged 22-34 years the hormone profile under continuous therapy with 0.5 mg lynestrenol/day have been investigated. Estradiol, progesterone and FSH values have been determined in plasma by the RIA or protein-binding method, whereas LH excretion was daily measured in the urine starting on the 5th day of cycle.
