Article Synopsis
  • Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) demands significant computational resources, leading to an underreported issue of electronic waste (e-waste) generated from its use, especially concerning large language models.
  • Research indicates that e-waste related to GAI could accumulate between 1.2 to 5.0 million tons from 2020 to 2030 due to factors like geopolitical semiconductor import restrictions and frequent server replacements for cost efficiency.
  • Adopting circular economy strategies can significantly mitigate e-waste, potentially reducing it by 16-86%, highlighting the need for effective e-waste management as GAI technologies continue to advance.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) stands as the most ambitious infrastructure project in history, marked by its scale of investment, extensive geographical reach across continents and countries, and a diverse array of projects from roads to digital networks. While the BRI's environmental sustainability has raised concerns, the impacts of construction materials used in these projects have been overlooked, especially in developing countries. Here, we map and account for the materials embodied in the BRI by integrating, for the first time, official governmental project reports, geographical information, and material flow analysis.

Several factors have traditionally hampered the effectiveness of agricultural extension services, including limited institutional capacity and reach. Here we assess the potential of large language models (LLMs), specifically Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), to transform agricultural extension. We focus on the ability of LLMs to simplify scientific knowledge and provide personalized, location-specific and data-driven agricultural recommendations.
