The use of intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) is thought to reverse the acute neurological and cardiac toxicities generated by local anesthetic and non-anesthetic drugs. The aim of this review is to provide an updated overview of ILE therapy in the management of the toxic efects of medications on humans. Indications, mechanisms of action, monitoring, dosing, lipid formulations, adverse efects, and contraindications related to ILE are highlighted.

Background/aims: Crohn's disease (CD) is a major subtype of chronic relapsing inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders. In this study, we assessed the possible contributions of serum oxidative/nitrosative stress and dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis to CD pathogenesis.

Materials And Methods: Patients with active CD (A-CD) at onset (n = 38), CD patients in the remission (R-CD) (n = 38), and healthy controls (n = 38) were prospectively included in this study.

Aim: To investigate changes in nitric oxide (NO) levels, oxidative stress, and dynamic thiol/disulphide homeostasis in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhages (aSAH).

Material And Methods: This prospective study included a total of 40 consecutive patients suffering from aSAH, who were operated on within the first 48 hours from onset of symptoms; CSF and blood samples were collected from these patients during their operations. To create a control group, blood samples and cerebrospinal fluid were taken from patients (n=40) without neurologic disorders who had undergone lumbar puncture for spinal anesthesia.

Article Synopsis
  • Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a condition characterized by the abnormal formation of bone in soft tissues and can be caused by trauma or genetic factors, with Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) being a rare hereditary type that severely impacts individuals' health.
  • The FDA recently approved palovarotene, the first drug specifically for treating HO in FOP patients, marking a significant development in therapeutic options for this condition.
  • While the introduction of palovarotene could change treatment approaches, there is still a concern due to the absence of long-term safety and efficacy data for this new medication.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors produce cardioprotective effects on heart failure (HF), even in the absence of diabetes. However, the underlying mechanisms of this cardioprotective effect remain unexplored. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on serum MOTS-c, humanin levels, nitrosative stress, and ferroptosis parameters in diabetic patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
