Determinants and progression of stigma in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease.

: Stigma in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neurone disease (ALS/MND) may be felt or enacted; felt stigma covers feeling devalued by the illness, whereas enacted stigma refers to being treated differently because of it. Stigma in ALS/MND has been shown to increase social withdrawal, worsen quality of life, and reduce use of assistive devices, so we explored prevalence and factors influencing stigma. : Participants in the Trajectories of Outcome in Neurological Conditions-ALS study completed scales measuring stigma, fatigue, spasticity, functioning, mood, worry, self-esteem, and perceived health, as well as demographic information and symptoms like head drop or emotional lability.

Assessing disability progression using the WHODAS 2.0 in multiple sclerosis: Investigating clinical and socio-demographic factors in a large longitudinal cohort study (TONiC-MS).

Background: Identifying influences on disability accumulation in multiple sclerosis (MS), including modifiable factors other than the core features of disease itself, is vital for clinical care, but has often relied on instruments with acknowledged psychometric shortcomings. We model MS disability using the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS) 2.0, a validated measure based on the WHO's biopsychosocial model and sensitive to the breadth of disability-related domains important to people, to investigate the factors associated with its trajectory after diagnosis.

Physical and psychological aspects of multiple sclerosis: Revisiting the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale (MSIS-29).

Background: The MSIS-29 measures the physical and psychological impact of MS.

Objective: The associations between MSIS-29 domains and demographic/clinical aspects were examined and trajectories analysed over time.

Methods: Data were collected in the Trajectories of Outcome in Neurological Conditions study for a diverse population of people with MS, with follow-up for up to 5 years.

Stigma and health outcomes in multiple sclerosis: a systematic review.

Background: Stigma is increasingly recognised as contributing to disability in MS. This systematic review aimed to answer the following question: To what extent is stigma associated with psychological and physical health outcomes in MS?

Methods: The inclusion criteria were: scientific publication of original quantitative research in adults with MS and/or Clinically Isolated Syndrome; outcome measures including a measurement of stigma and psychological and/or physical health; peer reviewed articles in the English language. Pubmed, PsycINFO and Science Direct were searched in November 2023.

Effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on message and Micro-RNA in human lung BEAS-2B cells.

Multi-walled Carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) lack sufficient quality cytotoxicity, toxicity, genotoxicity and genomic data on which to make environmental and regulatory decisions. Therefore, we did a multidisciplinary study of 3 MWCNTs in human lung cells (BEAS-2B) with the following endpoints: cytotoxicity, DNA damage, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, lipid peroxidation and mRNA and microRNA expression analyses. The MWCNTs were either unfunctionalized or functionalized with either -OH or -COOH.
