We discuss a rare presentation of malignant teratoma in a 63-year-old woman who was admitted to accident and emergency with abdominal distension, bloody diarrhoea and peritonitis. CT of the abdomen and pelvis showed free air in the abdomen and a gas-fluid filled cavity measuring 12×6 cm in the mid-pelvis with possible fistulation that was suspicious for malignancy. A 10×12 cm ruptured dermoid cyst was found intraoperatively, which was adherent to the bowel wall.

Context: Antibodies to islet autoantigens are detectable many years before clinical onset of type 1 diabetes and can be used to identify individuals at increased risk of diabetes. Zinc transporter 8 is a recently identified islet autoantigen.

Objective: Our aim was to determine whether addition of zinc transporter 8 autoantibodies (ZnT8A) improved prediction of type 1 diabetes in a well-characterized cohort of islet cell antibody (ICA)-positive first-degree relatives.

The effect of insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) on progesterone secretion by porcine granulosa cells and their modulatory effect on follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)-induced responses were examined. For comparative purposes, growth hormone (GH), previously shown to stimulate IGF-1 secretion, was also included. Granulosa cells from ovarian follicles (3 to 5 mm) were cultured in multiwell plates for the first 48 hours, either in the presence or absence of 1% fetal bovine serum (FBS).

A total of 149 maiden gilts (Landrace x Yorkshire) were assigned at random to one of three treatment groups at the onset of puberty. During the first and second estrus, two groups of gilts were inseminated with either 50 ml attenuated semen (n = 50) or physiological saline (n = 50). The control gilts (n = 49) remained untreated.
