Evaluating the effects of a dietary synbiotic or synbiotic plus enhanced organic acid on broiler performance and cecal and carcass Salmonella load.

Several feed additives such as synbiotics and organic acids may be viable options for controlling Salmonella in poultry. This experiment was conducted to study the effects of synbiotic product or synbiotic plus enhanced organic acid program on broiler performance, intestinal histomorphology, and cecal and carcass Salmonella load. A total of 648 day-of-hatch Cobb 700 male broiler chicks were randomly allocated to one of 4 dietary treatments: basal control diet (CON), CON diet supplemented with a synbiotic (PoultryStar; 500 g/MT; PS), CON diet supplemented with PS in the starter phase and enhanced organic acid (Biotronic PX Top3 US; 500g/MT; BPX) in the grower and finisher phase (PS1+BPX2), and the CON diet supplemented with PS in the starter and grower phase and BPX in the finisher phase (PS2+BPX1).

Renal Function in Kidney and Liver Transplant Recipients After A 130-km Road Cycling Race.

Background: A few patients, after receiving solid organ transplantation, return to performing various sports and competitions; however, at present, data no study had evaluated the effects of endurance cycling races on their renal function.

Methods: Race times and short form (36) health survey questionnaires of 10 kidney transplant recipients (KTR) and 8 liver transplant recipients (LTR) transplanted recipients involved in a road cycling race (130 km) were compared with 35 healthy control subjects (HCS), also taking laboratory blood and urine tests the day before the race, at the end of the race, and 18 to 24 hours after competing.

Results: The 3 groups showed similar race times (KTR, 5 hours 59 minutes ± 0 hours 39 minutes; LTR, 6 hours 20 minutes ± 1 hour 11 minutes; HCS, 5 hours 40 minutes ± 1 hour 28 minutes), similar short form (36) health survey scores, and similar trend of laboratory parameters which returned to baseline after 18 to 24 hours.

A new volumetric CT machine for dental imaging based on the cone-beam technique: preliminary results.

The objective of this paper is to present a new type of volumetric CT which uses the cone-beam technique instead of traditional fan-beam technique. The machine is dedicated to the dento-maxillo-facial imaging, particularly for planning in the field of implantology. The main characteristics of the unit are presented with reference to the technical parameters as well as the software performance.

[Evaluation of cardiac risk in patients undergoing major vascular surgery. Usefulness and limitations of transesophageal atrial pacing].

Patients undergoing vascular surgery are at high risk of developing cardiac events in the perioperative period. The aim of the study was the evaluation of the predictive accuracy of transesophageal atrial pacing (TAP) in identifying patients at higher risk of developing major cardiac events (cardiac death, acute myocardial infarction, unstable angina, heart failure and sustained ventricular tachyarrhythmias). We studied 96 consecutive patients, 80 males and 16 females, median age 63, requiring arterial surgery (aortofemoral or aortoiliac bypass and thromboendoarterectomy, abdominal aneurysm resection and extracranial carotid thromboendoaterectomy).

Changing trends in the outcome of urgent aneurysms surgery. A retrospective study on 170 patients treated in the years 1966-1990.

During the last 25 years 170 patients with ruptured aortic aneurysms were treated in our centre for vascular surgery with an overall mortality of 54%. We have subdivided these patients into three groups according to temporal factors: the 1st group includes 16 patients treated in the years 1966-1978; the 2nd group includes 93 patients treated from 1979 to 1987; the 3rd group includes patients from 1988 to 1990. In these years no selection of patients was made and everybody still alive was operated on.
