The world was not prepared for the global of pandemic in early 2020 with the arrival of COVID 19. Europe has some of the most developed health care systems in the world and this article explains the initial response to the pandemic from an orthopaedic and trauma viewpoint from 8 nations. Italy reported the first cluster in February, which then rapidly spread around the continent, requiring a rapid reorganization of services.

Fifty-one primary total hip arthroplasties were performed using Trabecular Metal Monoblock Acetabular Cup System (Zimmer Inc, Warsaw, IN). In a 2-year prospective study, its behavior was closely monitored by clinical, radiologic, and component migration assessment by Ein-Bild-Röntgen-Analyse method. There were no complications.

In a prospective study, the authors used a porous tantalum monoblock acetabular component for primary total hip arthroplasty between November 1997 and June 1999. A total of 156 consecutive primary total hip arthroplasty were done in 143 patients younger than 75 years. A total of 151 hips had a follow-up time from 8 to 10 years.

A multicentre study was performed in 253 consecutive primary THAs in three separate surgical centres.
