Neuronal differentiation of PC12 and chick embryo ganglion cells induced by a sciatic nerve conditioned medium: characterization of the neurotrophic activity.

The present work deals with the finding and characterization of a neurotrophic factor present in serum-free Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium in which rat sciatic nerves previously cultured for 9 days were maintained for 24 h. This sciatic nerve conditioned medium (SNCM) produced neuronal differentiation and neurite outgrowth on PC12 cells, as well as survival and differentiation of eight-day old chick embryo dorsal root ganglion (E8-DRG) and ciliary ganglion (E8-CG) neurons. SNCM activity was decreased by dilution, heating and trypsin treatment; it was not inhibited by anti-NGF and anti-bFGF antibodies; and it was not mimicked by CNTF, laminin and fibronectin.

Familial reciprocal translocation t(17;19) (q11.2;q13.2) associated with neurofibromatosis type 1, including one patient with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and an additional t(14;20) in B lymphocytes.

The cosegregation of a reciprocal translocation t(17;19) (q11.2;13.2) with neurofibromatosis type 1 in three generations suggested that the breakpoint on chromosome 17 involved the NF1 gene.

Recent influenza A (H1N1) infections of pigs and turkeys in northern Europe.

The most recent introduction of an avian influenza A virus without reassortment into mammals occurred in 1979 when H1N1 strains could be isolated from diseased pigs in northern Europe. This newly introduced avian virus formed a stable lineage in pigs and, in the meantime, spread all over Europe. In 1991 highly pathogenic H1N1 strains closely related to a contemporary swine virus were isolated from turkeys of a breeding farm near Bremen, Germany.

Compensatory growth in broiler chicks fed on Lemna gibba.

The growth of broiler chickens on diets containing various levels of Lemna gibba was evaluated. Groups of broiler chicks were fed on diets containing 0-400 g Lemna gibba/kg for 3 weeks. These chickens were then changed to standard diets for a further 2 weeks.
