Importance: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) has proven to be a challenging and enduring complication of prematurity. However, its association with neurodevelopment across the spectrum of IVH severity, independent of prematurity, and in the context of contemporary care remains uncertain.

Objective: To evaluate national trends in IVH diagnosis and the association with survival and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 2 years of age.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the hospitalization risks for perinatal conditions in children conceived through assisted reproductive technology (ART) versus naturally conceived children, with breakdowns by treatment type.
  • Conducted in the UK from 2002 to 2009, the research involved over 44,000 children born via ART and compared their hospital admissions to nearly 90,000 naturally conceived controls and their siblings.
  • Results showed that ART children had a higher risk of hospitalization for severe perinatal events compared to naturally conceived children, but no significant difference was found when comparing ART children to their naturally conceived siblings.

A case of locally acquired (autochthonous) mosquito-transmitted Plasmodium vivax malaria was diagnosed in Arkansas in September 2023. This represents the 10th autochthonous case identified nationally in 2023, after 20 years without recorded local mosquitoborne malaria transmission in the United States. The public health response included case investigation, active case surveillance, mosquito surveillance and control, assessment of medical countermeasures, and clinical and public outreach.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to investigate whether children conceived through assisted reproductive technology (ART) have a higher risk of developing Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) compared to the general population.
  • After analyzing data from over 118,000 children, it found 8 cases of LCH, which is higher than the expected 3.75 cases, but this result was not statistically significant.
  • The research indicated a notable association between increased LCH cases and specific ART methods like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), especially in instances of male factor infertility, suggesting more research is needed despite the overall low risk.

Triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) are hematophagous insects that transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent for Chagas disease, to humans and other mammals. As medically important vectors, species such as Rhodnius prolixus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) have long been used as a model organism for physiological studies. Laboratory rearing of triatomines is needed to support vector and parasite research.
