Around the world, a significant proportion of sewers and sewer maintenance holes are constructed from concrete. Unfortunately, one major problem with concrete sewer infrastructure is corrosion caused by biogenic hydrogen sulphide, which causes major issues for concrete structural integrity. Furthermore, concrete may be significantly corroded and softened but still pass a visual inspection.

Phosphorus dynamics across a 450 ka vertical chronosequence of loess derived (paleo)soils in central US.

Pedogenesis entails profound changes in terrestrial phosphorus (P) dynamics, yet means to understand how time- and climate-induced soil weathering impacts P-cycling over geologic timescales remain relatively limited to space-for-time substitution approaches with multi-site chronosequences. We tested an alternative approach for evaluating terrestrial P dynamics described by the Walker-Syers model by measuring P pools in a ~ 450 ka loess-paleosol sequence. This vertical chronosequence reflects episodic proglacial loess deposition during multiple glaciations and interglacial soil development in central North America in a four-stage loess-paleosol sequence that initiated with the pre-Illinois Episode glaciation.

Unlabelled: This study evaluates the growth of mycobacteria in samples from cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and tissue samples using the mycobacteria growth indicator tube (MGIT) incubated at 30°C in comparison to conventional MGIT cultures incubated at 37°C in a BACTEC MGIT 960 device and solid media incubated at 36°C and 30°C. A total of 1,549 samples were analyzed, of which 202 mycobacterial isolates were cultured from 197 positive specimens, including five mixed cultures. On social media, numerous animal videos are uploaded and viewed every day. However, these videos, which are apparently funny for humans, are often associated with animal suffering. In this study, 3246 participants of an online survey were asked about their personal perception of animal videos on social media, about recognising animal suffering in these videos, and about their respective reactions.

The Lack of Synapsin Alters Presynaptic Plasticity at Hippocampal Mossy Fibers in Male Mice.

Synapsins are highly abundant presynaptic proteins that play a crucial role in neurotransmission and plasticity via the clustering of synaptic vesicles. The synapsin III isoform is usually downregulated after development, but in hippocampal mossy fiber boutons, it persists in adulthood. Mossy fiber boutons express presynaptic forms of short- and long-term plasticity, which are thought to underlie different forms of learning.
