Association between sarcoidosis and HLA polymorphisms in a Czech population from Central Europe: focus on a relationship with clinical outcome and treatment.

Background: Sarcoidosis is an immune-mediated systemic disease with unknown etiology affecting the lung predominantly. The clinical manifestation of sarcoidosis is rather diverse ranging from Löfgren's syndrome to fibrotic disease. Also, it differs among patients with distinct geographical and ethnic origins, consistent with environmental and genetic factors' role in its pathogenesis.

HLA class II variants defined by next generation sequencing are associated with sarcoidosis in Korean patients.

Polymorphic genes with immune functions, namely those of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system, have been implicated in sarcoidosis pathogenesis. As HLA polymorphisms in sarcoidosis have not been yet investigated in the Korean population, we used next-generation sequencing (NGS), allowing detailed characterization of HLA alleles to investigate the role of HLA variation in Korean sarcoidosis patients. We enrolled 103 patients diagnosed by the ATS/ERS/WASOG guidelines at Asan Medical Centre, Seoul, Korea.

Evidence for improved survival with bevacizumab treatment in recurrent high-grade gliomas: a retrospective study with ("pseudo-randomized") treatment allocation by the health insurance provider.

Introduction: Despite a large number of trials, the role of bevacizumab (BEV) in the treatment of recurrent high-grade gliomas is still controversial. Evidence regarding an effect on overall survival in this context is ultimately inconclusive. At the Department of Radiation Oncology at Erlangen, Germany we treated a large cohort of patients with recurrent gliomas where bevacizumab use was determined exclusively by the health care provider's approval of reimbursement.

Immune responses are important for efficient tumor elimination, also in immune privileged organs such as the brain. Fostering antitumor immunity has therefore become an important challenge in cancer therapy. This cannot only be achieved by immunotherapies as already standard treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy modify the immune system.
