Inflammation is a critical driver of the early stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and offers an opportunity for therapeutic intervention before irreversible damage and vision loss associated with later stages of DR ensue. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have shown mixed efficacy in slowing early DR progression, notably including severe adverse side effects likely due to their nonselective inhibition of all downstream signaling intermediates. In this study, we investigated the role of prostanoids, the downstream signaling lipids whose production is inhibited by NSAIDs, in promoting inflammation relevant to early-stage DR in two human retinal cell types: Müller glia and retinal microvascular endothelial cells.

Background: Empathy plays an important role in the interaction and communication with patients. Physicians' empathy has various positive patients' and physicians' outcomes. Despite the inclusion of empathy in medical curricula and the relevance of empathy in general and physicians' concept of it to medical care, there is no common definition of empathy in the clinical context: definitions tend to be abstract and we do not know enough about medical students' conceptualization of clinical empathy.

Article Synopsis
  • Anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery (AAOCA) is a rare heart condition that can cause serious heart issues, making detailed examination essential for treatment decisions.
  • The NARCO trial will use coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) to identify high-risk anatomical features in AAOCA patients, followed by both invasive and non-invasive tests to assess heart function.
  • The study aims to refine patient selection for revascularization, optimizing risk assessment and reducing unnecessary tests and costly procedures for those with AAOCA.

Enhancers are short DNA sequences that activate their target promoter from a distance; however, increasing the genomic distance between the enhancer and the promoter decreases expression levels. Many genes are controlled by combinations of multiple enhancers, yet the interaction and cooperation of individual enhancer elements are not well understood. Here, we developed a synthetic platform in mouse embryonic stem cells that allows building complex regulatory landscapes from the bottom up.
