Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is a vector of the bacteria Liberibacter americanus (Lam) and Liberibacter asiaticus (Las), which are phloem-restricted and associated with the most important and destructive worldwide citrus disease, Huanglongbing (HLB). Currently, no cure for HLB has been described. Therefore, measures have focused on reducing populations.

Periodontal disease (PD) is a polymicrobial chronic inflammatory condition of the supporting tissues around the teeth, leading to the destruction of surrounding connective tissue. During the progression of PD, osteoclasts play a crucial role in the resorption of alveolar bone that eventually leads to the loss of teeth if the PD is left untreated. Therefore, the development of antiresorptive therapies targeting bone-resorbing cells will significantly benefit the treatment of PD.

Article Synopsis
  • Sugarcane is crucial for global agriculture, but its growth is challenged in acidic soils high in aluminum (Al), which can hinder crop development; studying its responses to Al stress can help enhance productivity in such conditions.
  • Various Brazilian sugarcane cultivars were tested for their physiological responses, nutrient contents, and gene expression related to Al stress, revealing significant differences among them.
  • The RB867515 cultivar was the most tolerant to Al stress, maintaining nutrient levels and showing key gene expressions for resilience, while RB928064 and RB935744 exhibited lower tolerance, providing insights for breeding Al-tolerant sugarcane varieties.

Phytocystatins are endogenous cysteine-protease inhibitors present in plants. They are involved in initial germination rates and in plant defense mechanisms against phytopathogens. Recently, a new phytocystatin derived from sweet orange, CsinCPI-2, has been shown to inhibit the enzymatic activity of human cathepsins, presenting anti-inflammatory potential and pro-osteogenic effect in human dental pulp cells.

Transgenic sugarcane expressing V-ATPase subunit E dsRNA affects growth and survival of Sphenophorus levis. Plants being sessile organisms are constantly confronted with several biotic and abiotic stresses. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp) is a major tropical crop widely cultivated for its sugar and other by-products.
