Semiconducting SnSe, an analog of black phosphorus, recently attracted great scientific interest due to a disputed report of a large thermoelectric figure of merit, which has not been reproduced subsequently. Here we concentrate on the low-temperature ground state. To gain a better understanding of the system, we present magneto-transport properties in high-quality single crystals of as-grown, lightly doped SnSe down to liquid helium temperatures.

Upon introducing charge carriers into the copper-oxygen sheets of the enigmatic lamellar cuprates, the ground state evolves from an insulator to a superconductor and eventually to a seemingly conventional metal (a Fermi liquid). Much has remained elusive about the nature of this evolution and about the peculiar metallic state at intermediate hole-carrier concentrations (p). The planar resistivity of this unconventional metal exhibits a linear temperature dependence (ρ ∝ T) that is disrupted upon cooling toward the superconducting state by the opening of a partial gap (the pseudogap) on the Fermi surface.

The PdGa intermetallic compound is a highly selective and stable heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst for the semi-hydrogenation of acetylene. We have studied single crystals of PdGa grown by the Czochralski technique. The (69)Ga electric-field-gradient (EFG) tensor was determined by means of NMR spectroscopy, giving experimental confirmation of both the recently refined structural model of PdGa and the theoretically predicted Pd-Ga covalent bonding scheme.

The thermal conductivity kappa in the basal plane of single-crystalline hexagonal NbSe2 has been measured as a function of magnetic field H, oriented both along and perpendicular to the c axis, at several temperatures below T(c). With the magnetic field in the basal plane and oriented parallel to the heat flux we observed, in fields well below H(c2), an unexpected hysteretic behavior of kappa(H) with all the generic features of a first order phase transition. The transition is not manifest in the kappa(H) curves, if H is still in the basal plane but oriented perpendicularly to the heat-flux direction.
