Historical investigations: risk management in a New Zealand hospital 1888-1904.

This article reports an historical research project in which four events within one hospital are examined from the point of view of what, today, would be termed 'risk management'. The examples involve a nurse sustaining injury in the course of her work, a fire in the hospital and two instances of patient complaints--one concerning nursing care and the other relating to a time lag between admission to hospital and receiving medical attention. All would have their counterparts in situations dealt with by today's Risk Management Departments.

Effect of vaccination with 3 recombinant asexual-stage malaria antigens on initial growth rates of Plasmodium falciparum in non-immune volunteers.

A placebo controlled, randomised, double blind trial was conducted in human volunteers to test a mixture of three recombinant Plasmodium falciparum blood stage antigens for its ability to reduce the initial growth rates of parasites. The vaccine contained recombinant MSP2 (3D7 allele), a portion of MSP1 (190LCS.T3) and part of the RESA antigen (C terminal 771 amino acids) in the Montanide ISA 720 adjuvant (SEPPIC).

Two phase I vaccine trials were conducted to test the immunogenicity and safety of a vaccine containing three recombinant malaria antigens from the asexual stage of Plasmodium falciparum. The three antigens are a fragment of MSP1 (190LCS.T3); MSP2 and a portion of RESA and were formulated in Montanide ISA720 adjuvant.

Total fluoride intake in children aged 3 to 4 years--a longitudinal study.

Several previous studies using food consumption tables or diet records have estimated that children aged 1 to 12 years resident in fluoridated (1 ppm) areas receive, on average, between 0.05 and 0.07 mg fluoride/kg body weight from foods and drinks alone.

Scanning electron microscopy of dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA)-treated hamster cheek pouch.

The aim of the present study was to describe changes which could be regarded as a result of neoplastic rather than inflammatory processes. Fifty-five weeks after 6 weeks of DMBA application to the cheek pouches of 5 male hamsters there were 4 types of lesion: larger ulcerated sessile; smaller non-ulcerated sessile; non-ulcerated pedunculated; conical projections. These and the rest of the pouches were examined by scanning electron and light microscopy.
