Article Synopsis
  • Negative symptoms in schizophrenia negatively impact social and occupational outcomes, and this study aimed to identify baseline predictors of these symptoms measured four years later in first-episode patients.* -
  • The analysis of 77 patients found that the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) and severity of negative symptoms at the initial visit were significant predictors of later severity, with longer DUP correlating strongly with increased negative symptoms.* -
  • The findings emphasize the importance of early intervention in schizophrenia, as prolonged DUP is linked to worsening negative symptoms, highlighting the need for preventive measures in clinical practice.*

Article Synopsis
  • Sarcoidosis is a disease that causes inflammation in different parts of the body, and it can affect the heart even if people don't have heart symptoms.
  • This study looked at 55 patients who were recently diagnosed with sarcoidosis but showed no heart issues, using a special heart scan called CMR to check for heart involvement.
  • The results showed that only a small number of those patients (6%) had signs of heart issues, suggesting that heart problems are rare in these cases, but the CMR scan can be helpful to find them.

Sarcoidosis is a highly variable, systemic granulomatous disease of hitherto unknown aetiology. The GenPhenReSa (Genotype-Phenotype Relationship in Sarcoidosis) project represents a European multicentre study to investigate the influence of genotype on disease phenotypes in sarcoidosis. The baseline phenotype module of GenPhenReSa comprised 2163 Caucasian patients with sarcoidosis who were phenotyped at 31 study centres according to a standardised protocol.

Background: Early diagnosis of schizophrenia could improve the outcomes and limit the negative effects of untreated illness. Although participants with schizophrenia show aberrant functional connectivity in brain networks, these between-group differences have a limited diagnostic utility. Novel methods of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analyses, such as machine learning (ML), may help bring neuroimaging from the bench to the bedside.

Background: The phenomenology of the clinical symptoms indicates that disturbance of the sense of self be a core marker of schizophrenia.

Aims: To compare neural activity related to the self/other-agency judgment in patients with first-episode schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (FES, n = 35) and healthy controls (HC, n = 35).

Method: A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using motor task with temporal distortion of the visual feedback was employed.
