Objective: To study the changes in dynamic compliance (C), ventilation/perfusion (V˙/ Q˙) mismatch and haemodynamic variables in hypoxaemic anaesthetized horses whose PaO increased following salbutamol inhalation.

Study Design: Retrospective, clinical, cohort study.

Animals: A group of 73 client-owned horses treated with salbutamol when PaO <100 mmHg (13.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of inhaled salbutamol versus salmeterol in treating arterial hypoxaemia in anesthetized horses.
  • A total of 108 horses were anesthetized for various procedures and randomly given either salbutamol or salmeterol if their oxygen levels dropped below a specific threshold.
  • Results showed that salbutamol was significantly more effective, with a higher percentage of horses showing improvements in oxygen levels compared to those treated with salmeterol.

Although rarely fatal, complications of ventral midline laparotomy incision in equine patients increase hospitalization cost and duration and may jeopardize return to athletic function. Therefore, many techniques have been developed to reduce their occurrence and expedite their resolution when they occur. Our technique of celiotomy incision closure includes the use of tension sutures (vertical U mattress) of polyglactin 910 on the linea alba, which is then apposed by polyglactin 910 interrupted sutures or a simple continuous pattern suture with a stop midway before routine closure of the superficial layers.
