The effect of heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution on the microbiological status of soils on the coast of the Taganrog Bay and adjacent areas was studied. The content of total and exchangeable forms of HMs, the content of 16 priority PAHs and the abundance of several groups of culturable microorganisms was determined, namely copiotrophic, prototrophic, aerobic spore-forming bacteria, actinomycetes, molds and yeasts. The content of total and exchangeable forms of HMs in urban coastal soils in industrial zone significantly exceeded that in non-urban soils.

Article Synopsis
  • Tumors that produce thyrotropin hormone (TSH) are rare, making up 1-3% of pituitary adenomas, often diagnosed in younger adults.
  • In a case study, a 44-year-old woman was diagnosed with a thyrotropinoma six years after showing isolated elevated TSH levels but normal thyroid hormones, leading to the use of β-blockers for tachycardia.
  • After identifying a 4 mm pituitary microadenoma via MRI, she underwent surgery, resulting in no recurrence of the adenoma but the development of secondary hypothyroidism, for which she now takes a lower dose of levothyroxine.

Plant-microbe interactions, including those of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM), have been investigated for a wide spectrum of model plants. The present study focuses on an analysis of gene expression that encodes phosphate and sugar transporters and carbohydrate metabolic enzymes in a new model plant, the highly mycotrophic MLS-1 line under conditions of phosphorus deficiency and inoculation with . Expression profiles were detected by RT-PCR at six plant stages of development (second leaf, third leaf, shooting, axillary shoot branching initiation, axillary shoot branching, flowering initiation).

A compact laboratory proximity soft X-ray microscope providing submicrometer spatial resolution and digital image registration is described. The microscope consists of a laser-plasma soft X-ray radiation source, a Schwarzschild objective to illuminate the test sample, and a two-coordinate detector for image registration. Radiation, which passes through the sample under study, generates an absorption image on the front surface of the detector.
