Exploring the relationships between ground observations and remotely sensed hazelnut spring phenology.

Crop phenology is very important in regular crop monitoring. Generally, phenology is monitored through field observation surveys or satellite data. The relationships between ground observations and remotely sensed derived phenological data can enable near-real-time monitoring over large areas, which has never been attempted on hazelnuts.

Point-of-Care Newborn Screening for Sickle Cell Disease at Selected Health Facilities in the Gambia.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) contributes significantly to childhood morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Early diagnosis through newborn screening (NBS) and subsequent comprehensive follow-up care will reduce the burden. Up till now, the prevalence of SCD among newborns remains unknown in The Gambia and there is no national NBS programme to address this significant public health issue.

Bronchodilator-responsive bronchiolar obstruction in term neonates: a case series.

Background: Bronchiolar obstruction, which causes airway obstruction in hyperresponsive airways, often results from the contraction of the airway's smooth muscles, increased viscid mucous secretions, and mucosal oedema consequent upon a reduced cyclic 3,5-adenosine monophosphate (c-AMP). These processes respond to bronchodilators. The six cases presented to us, in Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH), Banjul, The Gambia, in the newborn period with clinical features suggesting obstruction with airway reactivity with response to bronchodilator treatment are presented here.

Introduction: Three million African patients need a neurosurgical consultation every year, but there are not enough neurosurgeons to meet this need. Efforts have been made to increase the neurosurgical capacity through the creation of training programs in Africa. Although these programs have been successful, there is still a long way to go.
