Introduction With the advancing age of the population, there are an increasing number of patients with geriatric hip fractures. Despite the advancement of surgical knowledge and improvement of implant designs to treat geriatric hip fractures, mortality and morbidity remain high among these frail patients. In conjunction with the COVID-19 pandemic, the collateral damage dealt to these patients remains unknown as scarce resources are funneled to deal with the pandemic.

Introduction: Bertolotti's syndrome (BS) is defined as the presence of low back pain (LBP), radiculopathy or both with a dysplastic transverse process (TP) of the fifth lumbar vertebra that is articulated or fused with the sacral base or iliac crest. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and severity of BS to promote awareness of this disease.

3-O-Mesyl-1,6-di-O-trityl-beta-D-fructofuranosyl-(2-->1)-6-O-trityl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (3) was synthesized via stannylation of 6,1',6'-tri-O-tritylsucrose with dibutyltin oxide in benzene, followed by treatment of the crude product with methanesulfonyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine in dichloromethane at 0 degrees C. A similar treatment of the tri-tritylsucrose in toluene, instead of benzene, yielded 4-O-mesyl-1,6-di-O-trityl-beta-D-fructofuranosyl-(2-->1)-6-O-trityl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (4) as the major product. The X-ray crystal structure of the corresponding acetyl derivative, 3-O-acetyl-4-O-mesyl-1,6-di-O-trityl-beta-D-fructofuranosyl-(2-->1)-2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-6-O-trityl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (5), confirms the position and stereochemistry of the methanesulfonyl group at C-4 of the fructofuranosyl ring.

At 160 K, the glucopyranosyl ring of the title compound, C(20)H(28)ClIO(13), has a near-ideal (4)C(1) conformation and the fructofuranosyl ring has a twist (4)T(3) conformation. The two hydroxy groups are involved in intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds, with the latter interactions linking the molecules into infinite one-dimensional chains. The absolute configuration of the molecule has been determined.
