Circulating miRNAs associated with bone mineral density in healthy adult baboons.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally and circulate in the blood, making them attractive biomarkers of disease state for tissues like bone that are challenging to interrogate directly. Here, we report on five miRNAs-miR-197-3p, miR-320a, miR-320b, miR-331-5p, and miR-423-5p-associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in 147 healthy adult baboons. These baboons ranged in age from 15 to 25 years (45-75 human equivalent years) and 65% were female with a broad range of BMD values including a minority of osteopenic animals.

The production of auxin by dying cells.

In this review, I discuss the possibility that dying cells produce much of the auxin in vascular plants. The natural auxin, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), is derived from tryptophan by a two-step pathway via indole pyruvic acid. The first enzymes in the pathway, tryptophan aminotransferases, have a low affinity for tryptophan and break it down only when tryptophan levels rise far above normal intracellular concentrations.

Predictors of re-operation in the setting of non-acute subdural hematomas: A 12-year single center retrospective study.

Non-acute subdural hematomas (naSDH) may recur after surgical treatment. A second operation affects the quality of life and functional outcome of the patients, and lengthens hospital stay. We aim to identify the predictors of reoperation as the healthcare system in the US is moving towards patient-centered care.
