The aim of this study was to characterise the phenolic profile and evaluate the antioxidant activity of aqueous and methanol leaf extracts from Thunb., a species of flowering plant in the family. Liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array and electrospray-tandem mass spectrometry (DAD-ESI-MS) detection was used to characterise and quantify phenolic compounds.

Africa is famous for its floral biodiversity, exploited by local people for therapeutic purposes. However, such plants need to be scrutinised scientifically for the presence of bioactive compounds and possible biological properties. This study attempts for the first time to highlight the pharmacological and phytochemical profile of extracts prepared from leaves and stem barks of three African plants (Macaranga hurifolia Beille, Sterculia tragacantha Lindl.

A new family of heteroleptic bis-cyclometalated Ir complexes with formula [Ir(CN^ ) (NN^ )]Cl (CN^ =2-phenylpyridinate and NN^ =2,2'-dipyridylamine or N-benzylated 2,2'-dipyridylamines, were synthesized, characterized, and successfully used as photosensitizers in the catalytic photooxidation of an array of dialkyl, dibenzyl, alkyl aryl, and diaryl sulfides, as well as sulfur-containing amino acids. Furthermore, the reactions proceeded with optimal chemoselectivity, and atom economy under mild conditions. Experimental observations support a dual mechanism in which singlet oxygen and superoxide are the actual oxidants.
