To form nonspherical emulsion droplets, the interfacial tension driving droplet sphericity must be overcome. This can be achieved through interfacial particle jamming; however, careful control of particle coverage is required. In this work, we present a scalable novel batch process to form nonspherical particle-stabilized emulsions.

Coronaviruses (CoVs) maintain large RNA genomes that frequently undergoes mutations and recombination, contributing to their evolution and emergence. In this study, we find that SARS-CoV-2 has greater RNA recombination frequency than other human CoVs. In addition, coronavirus RNA recombination primarily occurs at uridine (U)-enriched RNA sequences.

Recently developed imaging techniques have been used to examine the redistribution of human red blood cells and comparator particles dispersed in carrier fluids within evaporating droplets. We demonstrate that progressive gelation initiates along an annular front, isolating a central pool that briefly remains open to particulate advection before gelation completes across the droplet center. Transition to an elastic solid is evidenced by cracking initiating proximal to front locations.

Humans were long thought to be the only mammal to experience menopause, the permanent cessation of reproduction followed by a long post-reproductive lifespan. More recently, evidence has been found for the existence of menopause in other long-lived mammals, including chimpanzees and gorillas. However, orangutans, which have the longest interbirth interval of any primate, have rarely been studied in this period of their lives.
