Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is the prototypic autoimmune disease that disrupts numerous immunity mechanisms with the potential to exert damage to any organ or tissue. Its etiology remains uncertain; however, genetic and environmental factors that differ between populations strongly influence its development.
