Another autoimmune disease was found to accompany insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in 14% of the young diabetics (n = 14) studied. Thyroid autoimmune disease was the most common of the accompanying autoimmune diseases, and was detected in 11% (n = 15) of the patients. Two thirds of the IDDM patients with autoimmune thyroiditis were hypothyroid, one was hyperthyroid, and 20% lacked detectable thyroid antibodies when thyroid disease was diagnosed.

The epidemiology of Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes was studied during a period starting after an unusually sharp epidemic of mumps. The number of diabetic cases increased significantly 2-4 years after the epidemic. Incidence rates were highest in geographical areas with the highest incidence of mumps and lowest in areas with the smallest numbers of reported mumps cases.

Jejunal biopsy was performed without selection in 110 of 201 children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus; serum reticulin antibody, antigliadin antibody by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and serum IgA were studied in all 201 children. Seven children had severe jejunal villous atrophy, giving a prevalence of celiac disease of at least 3.5%.
