Motor and somatosensory evoked potentials in asymptomatic spondylotic cord compression.

To assess whether electrophysiological tests are of use in differentiating between patients with asymptomatic cervical stenosis and patients with clinical evidence of myelopathy, we studied motor evoked potentials (MEPs) to magnetic brain stimulation and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in patients with asymptomatic cervical cord compression and compared the results to healthy age-matched controls. The MEPs were normal in 23 of 25 patients and SEPs in 22 of 23 patients. Thus, MEPs and SEPs are normal in most cases of asymptomatic cervical stenosis.

Hereditary cerebral haemorrhage with amyloidosis, Dutch type (HCHWA-D): clinicopathological studies.

Clinical and neuropathological findings are reported in 63 patients with hereditary cerebral haemorrhage with amyloid angiopathy. Patients had mostly recurrent strokes, and at least 80% of these were haemorrhages. Almost a third of the patients died within a year of their first and only recorded haemorrhage, half of them within two weeks.

The choice of treatment of single brain metastasis should be based on extracranial tumor activity and age.

Purpose: To determine if in patients with single brain metastasis the addition of neurosurgery to radiotherapy leads to lengthening of survival or to better quality of life.

Methods And Materials: From 1985 to 1990, 66 patients with single brain metastasis from a solid tumor were entered in a randomized trial of neurosurgery plus radiotherapy vs. radiotherapy alone.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy: clinical and radiological correlations.

Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were studied in 28 patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy. MEPs after cortical stimulation were abnormal in 27 patients, the responses in the leg muscles being affected the most often. Clinically asymptomatic motor lesions were detected in 7 patients (25%).

Treatment of single brain metastasis: radiotherapy alone or combined with neurosurgery?

Most patients treated for single or multiple brain metastases die from progression of extracranial tumor activity. This makes it uncertain whether the combination of neurosurgery and radiotherapy for treatment of single brain metastasis will lead to better results than less invasive treatment with radiotherapy alone. The effect of neurosurgical excision plus radiotherapy was compared with radiotherapy alone in a prospectively randomized trial with 63 evaluable patients with systemic cancer and a radiological diagnosis of single brain metastasis.
