Background: Serum albumin concentrations are frequently used to monitor nutritional therapy in the hospital setting but supporting studies are largely lacking. Within this secondary analysis of a randomized nutritional trial (EFFORT), we assessed whether nutritional support affects short-term changes in serum albumin concentrations and whether an increase in albumin concentration has prognostic implications regarding clinical outcome and response to treatment.
Methods: We analyzed patients with available serum albumin concentrations at baseline and day 7 included in EFFORT, a Swiss-wide multicenter randomized clinical trial that compared individualized nutritional therapy with usual hospital food (control group).
Specific molecular interactions underlie unexpected and useful phenomena in nanofluidic systems, but these require descriptions that go beyond traditional macroscopic hydrodynamics. In this letter, we demonstrate how equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and linear response theory can be synthesized with hydrodynamics to provide a comprehensive characterization of nanofluidic transport. Specifically, we study the pressure driven flows of ionic solutions in nanochannels comprised of two-dimensional crystalline substrates made from graphite and hexagonal boron nitride.

We develop a generalized Green-Kubo relation for the anomalous lift experienced by a passive tracer suspended in a two-dimensional chiral active fluid subjected to an applied force. This anomalous lift is characterized by a transport coefficient termed the odd mobility.

We investigate this difference using molecular dynamics simulations, demonstrating that its origin is in the distinct chemistries of the two materials. In particular, the presence of polar bonds in hexagonal boron nitride, absent in graphite, leads to Coulombic interactions between the polar water molecules and the wall.

Liftoff is the process by which buoyant river water separates from the bed and flows over denser saltwater. During low-discharge conditions liftoff occurs in the river and is accompanied by a change in the surface slope.
