Electrohydrodynamic phenomena in liquid crystals constitute an old but still very active research area. The reason is that these phenomena play the key role in various applications of liquid crystals and due to the general interest of the physical community in out-of-equilibrium systems. Nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) are ideally representative for such investigations.

There is growing interest in molecular structures that exhibit dynamics similar to bistable mechanical systems. These structures have the potential to be used as two-state operating units for various functional purposes. Particularly intriguing are the bistable systems that display spontaneous vibrations and stochastic resonance.

The intensive development of nanodevices acting as two-state systems has motivated the search for nanoscale molecular structures whose long-term conformational dynamics are similar to the dynamics of bistable mechanical systems such as Euler arches and Duffing oscillators. Collective synchrony in bistable dynamics of molecular-sized systems has attracted immense attention as a potential pathway to amplify the output signals of molecular nanodevices. Recently, pyridine-furan oligomers of helical shape that are a few nanometers in size and exhibit bistable dynamics similar to a Duffing oscillator have been identified through molecular dynamics simulations.

Tightly focused 515-nm, 0.3-ps laser pulses modify in a laser filamentation regime the crystalline structure of an Ib-type high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) synthesized diamond in a thin-plate form. The modified microregions (micromarks) in the yellow and colorless crystal zones, possessing different concentrations of elementary substitutional nitrogen (N) impurity atoms (C-centers), exhibit their strongly diminished local IR absorption (upon correction to the thickness scaling factor).

TmYbBdodecaborides represent model objects for the studies of quantum critical behavior, metal-insulator transitions (MITs) and complex charge-spin-orbital-phonon coupling phenomena. In spite of intensive investigations, the mechanism of semiconducting ground state formation both in YbBand in the Yb-based strongly correlated electron systems remains a subject of active debates. We have performed first systematic measurements of temperature-dependent spectra of infrared conductivity of TmYbBat frequencies 40-35 000 cmand in the temperature range 10-300 K.
