Article Synopsis
  • - Cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) show potential as both antimicrobial and anticancer agents, and linking them to bioactive molecules may enhance their effectiveness in treating cancer.
  • - In this study, two derivatives of usnic acid were combined with the AMP L-K6 using a new bonding method while both components demonstrated selective activity against cancer cells, specifically targeting the DNA repair enzyme TDP1.
  • - The resulting conjugates showed a range of effects, from decreased activity of the original drugs to increased cytotoxicity against glioblastoma cells, suggesting enhanced therapeutic potential compared to the individual components.

Despite considerable investigative efforts, the molecular mechanisms of postoperative delirium (POD) remain unresolved. The present investigation employs innovative methodologies for identifying potential primary and secondary metabolic markers of POD by analyzing serum metabolomic profiles utilizing the genetic algorithm and artificial neural networks. The primary metabolomic markers constitute a combination of metabolites that optimally distinguish between POD and non-POD groups of patients.

Acute coronary events (ACEs) associated with a SARS-CoV-2 infection can significantly differ from classic ACEs. New biomarkers, such as ceramides, may help in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. This study included 73 ACE patients for whom the SARS-CoV-2 infection was verified.

A large series of 2-arylchromen-4-ones containing from 1 to 3 fluorine atoms or a trifluoromethyl group in the structure was synthesized by condensation of fluorinated 2-hydroxyacetophenones with benzaldehydes in an alkaline medium and subsequent oxidative cyclization of the resulting 2'-hydroxychalcones by action of I in DMSO. The cytotoxicity of the obtained compounds was studied in glioblastoma cell line, SNB19, and in a monkey-derived normal kidney epithelium cell line, Vero. In addition, antiglycation activity of the obtained compounds was evaluated.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is considered one of the most severe complications, resulting in impaired cognitive function, extended hospitalization, and higher treatment costs. The challenge of early POD diagnosis becomes particularly significant in cardiac surgery cases, as the incidence of this complication exceeds 50 % in certain patient categories. While it is known that neuroinflammation, neurotransmitter imbalances, disruptions in neuroendocrine regulation, and interneuronal connections contribute significantly to the development of POD, the molecular, genetic mechanisms of POD in cardiac surgery patients, along with potential metabolomic diagnostic markers, remain inadequately understood.
