Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a serious complication of myocardial infarction (MI), with its global incidence significantly reduced in recent years due to advances in coronary reperfusion techniques. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an unexpected rise in the incidence of post-MI VSD, likely driven by delays in seeking treatment. This study retrospectively analyzed 10 cases of post-MI VSD treated at our hospitals from March 2018 to August 2023, comparing incidence rates across pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic periods.

Article Synopsis
  • The relationship between thyroid dysfunction, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and cardiovascular (CV) risk creates a complex network that worsens health issues, showing that these conditions influence and contribute to one another.
  • Thyroid hormones significantly impact glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as blood flow regulation, while both MetS and thyroid dysfunction can lead to increased insulin resistance and lipid levels, along with endothelial dysfunction.
  • Given the association between MetS and thyroid issues along with their mutual inflammatory and oxidative stress factors, assessing and correcting thyroid function in MetS patients is crucial, yet more research is needed on treating subclinical thyroid problems in this group.

The arteriovenous fistula constitutes the vascular access of first choice in hemodialysis. We present three clinical cases that highlight the resolution in interventional radiology of venous stenosis, one of the major complications. Clinical monitoring and instrumental diagnostics with color Doppler ultrasound have prevented the failure of the AVF due to high risk of thrombosis.

Hypoxia, centralization of blood in pulmonary vessels, and increased cardiac output during physical exertion are the pathogenetic pathways of acute pulmonary edema observed during exposure to extraordinary environments. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of breath-hold diving at altitude, which exposes simultaneously to several of the stimuli mentioned above. To this aim, 11 healthy male experienced divers (age 18-52y) were evaluated (by Doppler echocardiography, lung echography to evaluate ultrasound lung B-lines (BL), hemoglobin saturation, arterial blood pressure, fractional NO (Nitrous Oxide) exhalation in basal condition (altitude 300m asl), at altitude (2507m asl) and after breath-hold diving at altitude.
