Article Synopsis
  • Fluoroquinolones (FLQs) are widely used antibiotics for treating infections, but they can have serious side effects, particularly on the central nervous system, in older adults and those with slower medication metabolism.
  • These neurotoxic adverse effects can include severe symptoms like seizures and psychosis, and while newer FLQs like levofloxacin are often noted for these issues, even ciprofloxacin can cause them.
  • The article highlights the need for healthcare providers to recognize and understand these potential neurotoxic effects, especially in vulnerable populations, through a case study of an 88-year-old with dementia who experienced acute encephalopathy after FLQ treatment.

Autophagy plays a crucial role in the host response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection, yet the dynamics and regulation of autophagy induction on Mtb-containing vacuoles (MCVs) remain only partially understood. We employed time-lapse confocal microscopy to investigate the recruitment of LC3B (LC3), a key autophagy marker, to MCVs at the single cell level with our newly developed workflow for single cell and single MCV tracking and fluorescence quantification. We show that approximately 70% of MCVs exhibited LC3 recruitment but that was lost in about 40% of those MCVs.

Background: Long-acting injectable antiretrovirals (LAI-ARVs) for HIV prevention and treatment have been demonstrated in clinical trials to be non-inferior to daily oral medications, providing an additional option to help users overcome the challenges of daily adherence. Approval and implementation of these regimens in low- and middle-income settings have been limited.

Method: This study describes the anticipated barriers and facilitators to implementing LAI-ARVs in Vietnam to inform future roll-out.

PM pollution is a major global concern, especially in Vietnam, due to its harmful effects on health and the environment. Monitoring local PM levels is crucial for assessing air quality. However, Vietnam's state-of-the-art (SOTA) dataset with a 3 km resolution needs to be revised to depict spatial variation in smaller regions accurately.

This study focuses on fabricating a hybrid structure consisting of ZnO nanorods and ZnTe nanoparticles for NO gas detection, particularly exploring the impact of light irradiation at room temperature (RT). The morphology, physical characteristics, and chemical properties of the ZnO/ZnTe hybrid structure are carefully studied under diverse analytical methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and other measurements. The ZnO/ZnTe composite displayed an improved response toward 500 ppb NO under the blue light radiation effect.
