Objectives: This study aimed to assess the validity of external quality assessment (EQA) laboratory results across various cultural and environmental contexts and to identify potential improvement areas.

Methods: The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) Task Force on Global Laboratory Quality (TF-GLQ) conducted a 2-year study (2022 and 2023) in which EQA materials, related software and online training was provided by a commercial vendor to 100 laboratories in ten IFCC member society countries. The results were analysed on a monthly basis by the TF-GLQ, to show the number of submissions per country, tests per lab, acceptability rates, random failures and to get a measure of which analytes performed poorly.

The recent commercialisation of the first disease-modifying drugs for Alzheimer's disease emphasises the need for consensus recommendations on the rational use of biomarkers to diagnose people with suspected neurocognitive disorders in memory clinics. Most available recommendations and guidelines are either disease-centred or biomarker-centred. A European multidisciplinary taskforce consisting of 22 experts from 11 European scientific societies set out to define the first patient-centred diagnostic workflow that aims to prioritise testing for available biomarkers in individuals attending memory clinics.

Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is a devastating complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (ASAH) causing brain infarction and disability. Cerebral microdialysis (CMD) monitoring is a focal technique that may detect DCI-related neurochemical changes as an advance warning. We conducted retrospective analyses from 44 poor-grade ASAH patients and analyzed glucose, lactate, pyruvate, and glutamate concentrations in control patients without DCI (n = 19), and in patients with DCI whose CMD probe was located within (n = 17) or outside (n = 8) a new infarct.

Article Synopsis
  • * A survey with 16 questions was sent to 110 IFCC member countries, achieving a 41.8% response rate, revealing that while 78.3% had quality regulations, about 46.7% did not enforce them.
  • * The findings showed considerable variability in IQC practices, with only 29.3% of countries having written IQC policies, underscoring the need for standardized education and formal programs to enhance TQM in medical

Objectives: Clinical laboratory results are required for critical medical decisions, underscoring the importance of quality results. As part of total quality management, external quality assessment (EQA) is a vital component to ensure laboratory accuracy. The goal of this survey was to evaluate the current status of global laboratory quality systems and assess the need for implementation, expansion, or harmonization of EQA programs (EQAP) for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine.
