The main aim of this work is to account for the prevention and control of microbial growth on surfaces of interest in medical technology. Surface modification is often achieved by physiotherapy or chemical treatments that can involve time-consuming steps, hazardous reagents, and harsh conditions. One of the ways to overcome these drawbacks is the use of surface-active proteins such as hydrophobins.

Cyanobacteria belonging to the genera , , , and produce and release toxins called microcystins (MCs) into the water. MCs can have severe effects on human and animal health following their ingestion and inhalation.

In macroscopic evaluation, vulnerable plaques are characterized by one or more of the following features: microcalcification; neovascularization; lipid-rich necrotic cores (LRNCs); intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH); thin fibrous caps; plaque surface ulceration; huge dimensions, suggesting stenosis; and plaque rupture. Recognizing these macroscopic characteristics is crucial for estimating the risk of cerebrovascular events, also in the case of non-significant (less than 50%) stenosis.

Available tests developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) use inoculums sampled from different environments e.g.
