Mapping the relationship between neural activity and motor behavior is a central aim of sensorimotor neuroscience and neurotechnology. While most progress to this end has relied on restricting complexity, the advent of foundation models instead proposes integrating a breadth of data as an alternate avenue for broadly advancing downstream modeling. We quantify this premise for motor decoding from intracortical microelectrode data, pretraining an autoregressive Transformer on 2000 hours of neural population spiking activity paired with diverse motor covariates from over 30 monkeys and humans.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Previous studies suggest a positive relationship between higher hospital endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) volume and improved outcomes. We investigated this association using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2016 to 2020.
Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of the NIS examined the relationship between hospital EVT volume and outcomes.
Importance: Environmental service workers (ESWs) have a critical role within the hospital infrastructure and are at the frontline of infection prevention. ESWs are highly trained in managing all forms of regulated waste, which includes biohazardous waste, and are responsible for the overall patient experience, janitorial work, and infection prevention. Without environmental services, patients have a 6 times greater risk of being infected by pathogens from patients who previously occupied their room.

This article considers responsibilities and challenges inherent in the research relationship, from the position of a researcher who is also a counselling practitioner. It draws on my experience of undertaking a qualitative interview-based doctoral research study with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, engaging critically with the debates in the research literature concerning researcher-practitioner role boundaries and comparable (and distinct) areas of practice between research and counselling. I suggest that within well-held, monitored boundaries, practitioner identities and contextual knowledge are invaluable to the research relationship and that a collaborative fluidity can operate between researcher and professional (in this case, counsellor) identities rather than them being in conflict.

While this activity yields high-performance decoding over short timescales, neural data are often nonstationary, which can lead to decoder failure if not accounted for. To maintain performance, users must frequently recalibrate decoders, which requires the arduous collection of new neural and behavioral data.
