Dam accidents, often resulting from inadequate structural monitoring, pose significant environmental risks. In southern Brazil, the rupture of an evaporation-infiltration lagoon released over 500,000 m of treated domestic effluent into a coastal lagoon, raising concerns about potential contamination from nutrients and heavy metals. This study aimed to (1) assess the environment's self-purification capacity regarding dissolved nutrients, (2) determine total heavy metal concentrations in water and sediments throughout the coastal lagoon using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, (3) correlate variables influencing heavy metal availability to identify potential sources, and (4) evaluate environmental risks by comparing concentrations to established water and sediment quality guidelines.

Background And Objectives: Psychosocial stress is a potentially modifiable risk factor of early-onset ischemic stroke, with limited evidence suggesting a stronger association between stress and cryptogenic ischemic stroke (CIS) compared with strokes of known etiology. We aimed to explore the association between self-perceived stress and CIS, with subgroup analyses stratified by sex and age.

Methods: Young patients aged 18-49 years with a first-ever CIS and sex-matched and age-matched stroke-free controls from 19 European centers were included.

Background: Many patients with foregut cancer do not receive guideline-concordant treatment (GCT). Although social determinants of health (SDOH) have been associated with differences in receipt of GCT, the underlying mechanisms that perpetuate these disparities remain unknown. This mixed-methods study explored barriers to receipt of care among patients with foregut cancer.

Flow-batch analyzers demand meticulous volume control for successful application in quantitative determinations, with the incorporation of high-efficiency pumps and valves recommended for their construction. However, routine recalibrations are frequently needed to uphold the accuracy of manipulated volumes, highlighting the value of exploring new alternatives for volume control and measurement, with less sophisticated apparatus. In this work a compact Flow-Batch (FB) analyzer with piezoelectric micropumps was developed to perform standard addition calibration, incorporating image-based detection to perform volume control.

Introduction: Dementia is a progressive and debilitating disease, and people living with HIV (PLWH) often develop dementia much earlier than those not living with HIV. We estimated the incidence and prevalence of dementia and identified its key risk factors in a cohort of PLWH in British Columbia, Canada.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study used data from the Seek and Treat for Optimal Prevention of HIV/AIDS study.
