The virus of infectious rhinotracheitis of cattle (BHV-1) causes the respiratory diseases, encephalitis, vulvovaginitis, abortions, etc. in sensitive animals. The attempts to differentiate the viral strains by virology and serology methods were unsuccessful.

The attenuated IRTV strain induced the production of the acid-labile interferon in spleen and bone marrow cells of BALB/C mice. The indication of the assignment of the acid-labile interferon to the leukocyte-type of interferon consists in the activity of bovine interferon in a heterologous culture of human diploid fibroblasts and a higher interferon titer in bone marrow than in spleen cells (bone marrow cells contain B-cells which produce leukocyte interferon).
